Wellington secondary provision - parent evening
29 Aug 2024
We are excited to confirm that secondary Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) learners in Wellington will now have an option for bilingual education at a provision from 2025. After a successful parent information evening in Wellington, where questions were asked and answered, we are committed to making this additional pathway in Wellington from early years to the end of secondary school.
The Ministry of Education has supported us over recent years to secure a relationship and space at Tawa College. They provided valuable information for parents about the process undertaken to secure this space and what this looks like from a Ministry perspective. We are still working hard alongside the Ministry to ensure that this provision is successful and sustainable in the future.
Our next steps will involve working hard to set up the provision, including recruiting an outstanding teacher with deep knowledge of teaching DHH learners. This work is high priority. At the same time, we are committed to keeping the local Wellington parent community involved, with opportunities for those parents of Year 9 and 10 students who are exploring enrolment in 2025 to view the space and Tawa College so they can ask further questions and make informed decisions.
We want to thank the Wellington parents and Deaf communities for their unwavering advocacy over many years to ensure that the pathway for DHH learners in Wellington is set up. We are excited to be able to add this provision to our Enrolled School and look forward to welcoming learners next year. We also thank our Wellington based staff, who continue to support these learners.
