The Rūaumoko Marae Minecraft project is a unique initiative that brings together Māori Deaf students, digital technology, and cultural heritage. The project began as an idea in June 2022 and was developed with the help of PLD Providers - ImpactEd.
Students developed digital skills through this project and paid homage to the Marae's legacy. The Minecraft virtual representation of Rūaumoko Marae allows students to embrace their identities while deepening their understanding of Māori traditions, language, and history.
By integrating te ao Māori insights and digital technology, the project aims to nurture language, culture, and identity, paving the way for educational success. The virtual learning space will serve as a valuable legacy resource for future generations of students. The experience has been designed so students can build additional layers of learning on top of the current Rūaumoko Minecraft Marae. Future resources include (but are not limited to): virtual visual pepeha, an immersive Matariki night sky, tikanga, navigational journeys and Aotearoa Māori/Māori Deaf Histories.
The project aligns with the vision and guiding principles of Ka Hikitia and Ko Taku Reo's Māori Strategic Plan, ensuring that students learn in a manner that reflects their unique cultural identity and heritage.
The project aims to enrich students' cultural competency, showcase the purpose and vision of Rūaumoko Marae, and foster a learning environment that supports student-centred learning and student agency.
