Ko Taku Reo Sumner campus – dogs on site

20 Aug 2024

[NZSL]

We are aware members of the community have been walking their dogs through our Sumner campus for a number of years. Our staff and permanent student residents who are onsite throughout the school year have reported various incidents which have involved dogs on our site.

From now on we will be enforcing our Dogs on School Grounds and Trespasser on School Grounds policies. Log in details to view these policies are available on our website. Our school grounds are not freely accessible to the public. If someone is on our school grounds without permission, they may be questioned by a staff member and asked to leave.

We understand this will be disappointing for some of you, however as a residential school, the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff are our highest priorities. We have legislative responsibilities under child protection laws to ensure student safety at Ko Taku Reo, as well as policies and procedures in place to ensure all members of our community understand their responsibilities for maintaining a safe school environment. More information is available in our Student Wellbeing and Safety policy.

There is a designated space at the edge of our campus that is separate from our residential students (on the corner of Truro Street and Heberden Ave) where the community is welcome to walk their dogs on or off leash (while maintaining effective control of your dog). Please use this area instead of walking through Sumner campus, you can access it via Truro Street. Please also ensure you pick up after your dog and leave the area in a clean and tidy condition.

If you have any questions or concerns please email property@kotakureo.school.nz. We appreciate your understanding and support on this.
