Farewell Message from Terri Johnstone

25 Jan 2021

Given the clear direction and solid foundation of Ko Taku Reo, I am pleased to announce that I had my request for concluding my tenure as LSM (employment) approved by the Ministry. This was gazetted on the 22nd of December last year and unfortunately, given the timing, I did not have an opportunity to say goodbye in person.

Where do you start and what a journey!

As an organisation we have achieved so much together. From consultation with you and stakeholders back in 2017, we set ourselves the bold, and what I believe to be the right, decision of becoming one nationwide organisation. This was driven by principles of equity, accessibility, responsiveness, and best practice and we never lost sight of this. We now have a responsive organisational structure that will enable these goals to be actualised.

However, one cannot underestimate the mixed emotions associated with change. This is especially prevalent in organisations where there is passion and where there are long histories. I would like to acknowledge your work and commitment, especially to those who assumed transitional roles in a period of significant change.

Looking back, the highlight for me personally was working with the Board and senior leadership team to explore new possibilities that would make a difference for our students. It was this visioning and conceptual work that guided us, drove our conviction, and allowed us to design an organisation that is not only fit for purpose but sits within the wider landscape of Education.

It is with a sense of pride and absolute belief in your senior leadership team that I leave knowing Ko Taku Reo is well positioned to turn these aspirations into reality.

Thank you for your commitment to Ko Taku Reo. It has been a privilege being a part of this journey.

Kind regards

Terri Johnstone
