Consultation on the draft Physical Restraint Rules and Guidelines

02 Feb 2022

Kia ora koutou kātoa and warm pacific greetings

The Physical Restraint Advisory Group (the Advisory Group) established in September 2020, has helped the Ministry of Education develop draft Rules and Guidelines on physical restraint in schools, following changes to the law around the use of physical restraint in the Education and Training Act 2020. The Advisory Group, which includes representatives of parents, the education sector and disability communities, has drafted rules and guidelines to uphold the rights of children, whānau and school staff and to minimise and prevent the use of physical restraint except as a last resort.

We are very pleased to announce a consultation on the rules and guidelines is now live, and we would love to receive your feedback - the link is here.

Please share this link widely with your networks and within your communities. We want to hear from as many people as possible.

The survey is running until 31 March 2022. Once we have received everybody’s feedback, the Ministry will work with the Advisory Group to consider the feedback and make any changes before finalising the Rules and Guidelines for publication.
